A Day at the Horse Races with GTPS

Is horse racing HIP HOP?

Although a day at the horse races might seem like your parents’ favorite past time, it does indeed go hand in hand with the young hustler mentality involved in today’s hip hop culture. There is competition, gambling, great food, liquid spirits and yes, even sexy women. You’ll see everything from high rollers in fancy attire to families in flip flops. The best part? The horses have super swagged out names that are even more creative than some of your favorite rappers. Remember that Rick Ross and John Legend video for “Magnificent”? Yeah. That was filmed at a race track. The BAWSE, himself, raps about and is rumored to own a thugged out amount of thoroughbreds!

This past weekend, myself (MidWest Melly), Lex One, Brian Breach, Pr$fit and homies decided to visit Gulfstream Park Racing and Casino in Hallandale, Florida and make it a “Sunday Funday” for our Hip Hop fam. We may or may not have had some unrealistic expectations of what we would see (hip hop celebrities in over-the-top designer sun hats, jockeys the size of basketball players, horses tricked out with gold mouth pieces). Instead, we learned about the “race basics” from our friends at americasbestracing and we enjoyed the finer things in life like a decadent brunch buffet which included mimosas.

The GTPS team also tried our own luck in “getting that paper son” by betting on a few races. The races ran about every half hour so there was plenty of time and opportunity to win. Even those of us that weren’t the gambling type bet small amounts on different horses to win or place in each race.  The excitement and energy at the races is addictive! Although none of us won big, the Gulfstream Park track was beautiful and we had an indefinitely TRILL time.
