GC Brings Light to His Present, Past and Paradise on “Dark Portraits”

A new year is a chance to dream bigger, conquer new goals and give ourselves the gift of a clean slate. Although the glimmering hopes on the horizon are within reach, they are worth so much more when you consider all the years of pain and sacrifice you have lived to get where you are today. Our reflections are our most precious stories. An illustrative symbol of the true cost of our futures. While some are darker than others, it is up to us create the light that gives the past a purpose and the future a platform.

Giancarlo Rodriguez, also known as “GC“, is an artist who isn’t afraid to share this kind of introspective story. He defines what a true lyricist represents. He demonstrates the ability to invite the listeners into a story that they can connect to, while expressing it in a way that most can not. The Chicago emcee has paid his dues in life… as well as to the city that continues to inspire his craft. The 22 year old has experienced more than most of us could physically or mentally comprehend in our own lifetime, losing his sight due to being shot. Although the event might have made him blind, GC has more vision and passion for hip hop than most emcees twice his age. He has earned the respect of the Chicago Hip Hop underground, ferociously performing his freestyles at venues like Subterranean and earning a place among the Chi Rock Nation 4 family.

GC’s latest mixtape, Dark Portraits, explores the artist’s present, past and paradise through eleven tracks that combine elements of power and soul. GC’s sample selection is strong with production by 9th Wonder, Statik Selektah, Simon Sez, Ramon King (Prince Talent) and more. The artist flexes his lyrical skill discussing complex topics like personal relationships, identity, and his views on social injustice and violence in the Windy City.

“This mixtape guides you through my life growing up in Chicago, telling stories and experiences… It is time for a clearer picture.” – GC
