The first performance footwear for adaptive lacing, the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0 is the payoff of significant research in digital, electrical and mechanical engineering. The shoe provides precise, consistent, personalized lockdown that can be manually adjusted on the go. The product of years of work done by Tinker Hatfield, Tiffany Beers and Mark Parker.

So, how does it work? “When you step in, your heel will hit a sensor and the system will automatically tighten,” explains Tiffany Beers, Senior Innovator, NIKE, Inc., and the project’s technical lead. “Then there are two buttons on the side to tighten and loosen. You can adjust it until it’s perfect.”

Positioned as the first step towards truly adaptive footwear, this move looks to do away with the slipping and pressure points associated with laces while gaining on the ability to create a shoe that senses and reacts to an athlete’s needs in real time. No word yet as to how this will effect the rumored Nike Air Mag release, but stay tuned, and until then enjoy the visuals ….
